The goal of today's post is to simply ask the question. Is there a difference in a black woman going natural, and a bi-racial woman being natural? Please leave a comment and tell me what you think.

Today I want to talk about something that I recently discovered. You ready? I don't NEED to wash my hair every week in order for it to look fabulous! Neither do you. I must admit, I have ididn'twashmyhairaphobia. This has stressed me out for much of my natural hair journey. Let me explain, I fully believe that a good hair care regimen is essential for maximum growth and overall hair health. However, life has a way of disrupting my routines. Then there are those times when I am just to tired to deal with my hair. Here is a simple little technique I use for such times as these.

You will Need
1. 1 Spray bottle (you could also wet your hair in the shower)
2. Leave in conditioner (I use Cream of Nature yellow bottle)
3. Gel ( I use Eco Styler Olive Oil or Amp Pro Olive Oil)
4 1 Soft bristle hair brush

First, you wet you hair lightly. It's important not to soak it because if you're like me, you're running out the house as soon as you're done. Then, you apply leave in conditioner to your entire head. Try to coat your hair meaning not too much or too little. Next, get a nice amount of gel (about a tbsp) put it in your hands. Rub your hands together. Apply the gel to your head. Depending on the length of your hair, you can simply slick up the sides to make a nice bun. The bun is a great protective style and, it's elegant. Or, if your hair is shorter apply the gel all over for the wash and go look. That's it! You can do this as many times as you need to. As I type this post I am on my 3rd week! (I have a lot going on) Just a little side note, you might need to play around with your gel/conditioner combination to find the one that doesn't give you a white film or flakes! Oh, use the brush to slick the sides up for the bun or, you can slick down your baby hair.

1. How hard was it for you to decide on going natural?
It wasn't very hard because my mom is natural. I already knew it would be kind of hard at first.

2. How did your friends react when you cut got the BC?
4. What is the hardest part of being natural?
I thought my hair would stay as curly as it is when it's wet. It didn't. My hair got super dry when it dried. The hardest thing was finding products that would keep my hair moisturized. That was kind of fun too!
5. Have you encouraged any of your friends or family to go natural?
Not really because that should be their decision. I would be there for them if they did.
7. Did you wear your hair out or did you hide it when you first got your BC?
I hid it for like the first 2 and a half months because I wasn't used to seeing myself with really short hair.
Several months into my natural hair journey my husband commented on something that left me speechless. He said, "Your natural hair cost more than when you had a perm?" Now, it should be noted that my husband is the saver of the family, and he would notice something like that before anyone else would. But, that doesn't take away from his point. I was spending a small fortune on products. I bought everything that promised frizz-free, curl-defining, soft, shiny, hair! Most of the time I was satisfied with my purchases. The problem was, I didn't know how much longer I could remain natural. I was desperate to find a way.

My first breakthrough came when I read A. Dickey's Hair Rules. Through his book I finally understood which products were essential and which were simply not. Slowly, I began buying less expensive products. However, these products delivered the same results. I had arrived! Or so I thought...

My final breakthrough came when I stumbled upon the www.NaturalHairCommunity.com I found tried and true homemade recipes that worked wonderfully. Most of the ingredients I already had in my kitchen. These recipes worked, better than anything I had purchased in the store! (There is a list of homemade product recipes that I have collected and tried under the Recipes Unlimited tab) Another plus is that I know exactly what I am putting in my hair. Finally, my natural is not costing me a fortune, and I am having so much fun making new products.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18138936100980395931noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5011658878416066045.post-74325813799840783502011-10-27T17:03:00.000-07:002011-10-27T23:39:04.326-07:00The Carmel Treatment: Just What is It?Today on Twitter several ladies were talking about putting a Carmel Treatment in their natural hair. I hated it! But, my hair didn't have many complaints. To prepare my virgin hair she would wash it the night before. Then, she would braid it into four big plats. The day of the press she would find me (hiding under something) and the process began. A can of Royal Crown, a pressing comb, a stove, and a hand towel were her weapons of choice. This was an excruciating process but, my hair hung down my back. Now that I am natural again, I have been thinking about my grandmother's technique. What she did for my hair was simple yet effective (minus the heat). Which brought me to my decision to bring back my grease! Yes..... grease my hair loves it! It's cheap and, there are a lot of good options nowadays. All it takes is a little careful consideration and, your hair may finally be able to maintain that all elusive shine. Shine is something we curly girls covet. What's the worse thing that could happen? If your hair doesn't like this old friend; you can simply wash it out. I can't speak for everyone but, many curly girls are getting Ol' Skool Cool! Will you join us?
When I decided to get the "BC" I never contemplated that my decision would be a family affair. The day I walked through the door, virtually bald, I heard everything from... "What did you do?" to.... "I don't want a natural woman!" All I kept telling them was, "Its just hair!" But, I figured out very quickly that it wasn't just hair. What I did, when I cut my hair, was disrupt their perception of who I was, and what I should look like. Deep down I felt bad about disappointing my family. But, I was on a mission to accept the woman God had originally designed. This included my hair, as well as, my body. I knew that my family would never accept this woman until I had. I have been natural for approximately 9 months now and I cannot tell you how good I feel! Oh, and my family, they have come around (slowly), and now they are actually complimenting me on my "beautiful" "curly" hair.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18138936100980395931noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5011658878416066045.post-52170082380316419552011-07-15T10:36:00.000-07:002011-10-29T05:56:12.595-07:00Product Junky to be....... or NOT to be.....?

This was taken before I cleaned out my cabinet..... lol

Hey Everyone, I haven't posted in a while but there's a good explanation for that.... husband + kids + school = exhausted! But, I'm back, and I have a lot to dish! I guess I'll started with being cured from product junkitis ( I just made that word up lol). It all started when I took my kids to the library to get a library card. They signed up for the summer reading program; this gave me some time to browse the shelves myself. I immediately went to the circulation desk to ask where I could find books on natural hair care. She looked at me like I was crazy...... I insisted "You have to have at least one." She pointed me to the cosmetic section. She said shamefully, " If we have anything, it will be over there."

It just so happened, that they did have a total of 6 natural hair books I took them all and started reading. I felt like a kid in a candy store (with a pocket full of money). I read about the chemistry of our hair. I read about the differences between African curly hair v. straight hair. But..... when I reached the sections on which products to avoid and what products to adore, I couldn't believe my eyes. I had been had.

When I first got my big chop, I bought everything I could find that promised: frizz free, tangle free, shiny, curl defining, growth stimulating results. If you reading this you know exactly what I mean. These books, in general, and A. Dickey's book Hair Rules specifically, taught me that its not about how many products you have because no product can do it all. Let me repeat NO product, regardless what it claims, can do it all!

Here's what I understand now.... if you (or someone you love) has naturally curly African type hair conditioner is your secret weapon. Obviously, the more natural ingredients the conditioner contains the more pricey. But you can find conditioner that does a fantastic job really cheap if you take the time to read labels. A conditioner that contains Hydrolyzed protein, as one of its top ingredients, is a good conditioner period. So why spend $10 if you can get the same ingredient in a conditioner that costs $3. Next, you need several types of conditioner, but keep in mind, conditioner has one objective- keep your hair feeling soft.

A deep conditioner should be used every time you shampoo. You can either deep condition as a pre-poo or after shampooing. Instant conditioner is great for co-washing (washing you hair with conditioner only). I personally co-wash almost everday, during the summer, and every week in fall/winter. My hair loves it, and it give me a fresh head to start with. Leave- In conditioners are great to use underneath almost any styling product for added softness and manageability.

Now, let's talk shampoo. Shampoo was created for the scalp. Shampoo cleanses the scalp but one draw back, is that it can strip your hair of vital oil (sebum) that your scalp produces naturally. That is why I recommend that you condition before and after washing. Ok, let's move on to styling products. These were my personal weakness. Whatever styling products you choose should essentially depend on the style you are trying to create or maintain. Personally, all I have left in my stash is styling gel (Eco Styler w/ Argon Oil), leave in conditioner (Taliah Waajid The Great Detangler), some hair grease (Africa's Best), and curl cream (Taliah Waajid Curly Curl Cream). The gel I use for styles that require more hold. The curl cream I use for softness, and as breakage barrier. I use the grease for braid outs and twist outs. I hope this helps free you from product junkitis, and save you some money for.... well..... hair accessories. This is my new addiction. Help me somebody lol.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18138936100980395931noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5011658878416066045.post-86167613724915067952011-06-06T22:08:00.000-07:002011-10-29T05:59:14.490-07:00Curly Hair Secret Revealed: How maintain Your Wash n Go
So..... I was struggling to find a styling technique that would give me great curl definition and shine with minimal crunchiness. I have tried several techniques, products, and product lines, and I found that most everything worked most of the time. But, I needed something that would work all the time. So after several experiments; I believe that I have developed a technique that works 99% of the time (that's pretty good right). I bet you want to know what it is! Well, its simple but it works.

First, I wash (or co-wash) and deep condition my hair. While still in the shower, I apply a second day serum (Kinky-Curly or Curls both available at Target). I apply the second day serum because it has the perfect consistency. It also coats the hair and gives great curl definition. Then, I dab a little Eco Styler Argan Oil Gel to each section for hold. I spray some Doo Gro Shine Serum on my hair. Next, quickly dip my head under the water stream. Finally, I shake my head all around, letting my curls bounce free. I do it this way because if I've applied too much product (I'm heavy handed) the quick rinse will even it out. Plus, shaking my head rather then manually manipulating my curls creates less frizz, and allows them to fall naturally. Voila! I'm good to go for at least 3-4 days. For maintenance I apply some sort of curl enhancing creme (Taliah Waajid's Curly Curl Cream is great ). I hopes this helps you as much as it has helped me.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18138936100980395931noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5011658878416066045.post-12773551106503833252011-04-26T18:23:00.000-07:002011-11-10T14:46:13.897-08:00Twist Out Grease and Water Style

Twisting my hair is perhaps my favorite go-to style. After reading on Curly Nikki.com, that twisting your hair while it's wet (freshly washed) and then allowing it to dry would help me retain length. I tried it. It worked GREAT! My hair usually loses about 65% of its length after it has completely dried. But after twisting it; I was amazed. So, bet I you want to know what I used..... I used good old grease. I used to be one of those girls who wouldn't use petro or anything NOT "all natual." I have simply changed my mind. The process was relatively simple. Once I had finished two strand twisting my hair, I let it dry completely, then I took all of the twists down. That's it!
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18138936100980395931noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5011658878416066045.post-53876200713243722252011-03-29T10:40:00.000-07:002011-10-21T12:59:40.500-07:00A Diet For Your Hair
Today I want to talk about what I call your hair diet. The most important aspect of your hair journey is to develop a solid hair care regimen. Now, how you develop this regimen is truly a matter of trial and error. I started out with a few basic products: shampoo, creme based leave in conditioner, essential oils, and natural hair gel. The key is pick one day a week, and designate that as your "wash day." It is also important to pre- poo (putting essential oil in your hair prior to wash.) Something else that you can do in between washes is co washing. Co washing is when you wash your hair with conditioner only. This is helps add moisture and its a quick alternative when you need to re wet your hair. I will discuss styling in another post so all I will say right now is; keep manipulation (styling) to a minimum. Once you have set your style for the week, two weeks, month ect... leave it alone.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18138936100980395931noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5011658878416066045.post-57563447261534615622011-03-26T06:54:00.000-07:002011-03-26T07:52:55.334-07:00A Great Place to Start: Figuring Out Your Hair TypeOne of the most important things I learned early in my natural hair journey was; my hair type. Knowing your hair type (texture) is foundational to everything else you will do (or not do) to your hair. I stumbled up on this information, and I want to spare you the frustration. As I continued to research how to care for my newly natural hair; I began to read forums and websites. I kept noticing that women would frequently put a certain number and letter combination before or after their post (you may have noticed this too). Things like 3c, 4a, 2b... Curious, I searched around and found out that these number/letter combinations were actually referring to hair type!

So, you ask, how can you tell what hair type you have? The easiest way is to go to www.naturallycurly.com. Click on the tab, at the top of the page, labeled Hair Types. There you will find several boxes that reveal certain curl patterns. Then, you click on the box that looks most like your hair in its natural state (free from product). You will see a detailed description about that particular hair type, and several helpful suggestions for product combinations that would be good for your hair. That's it! I hope you have found this post helpful. If so, drop a line and let me know what you found out. Oh, I am a 3c by the way 8 ).
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18138936100980395931noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5011658878416066045.post-33079975823354694252011-03-22T19:33:00.000-07:002011-03-22T19:42:49.142-07:00Happy to be NappyAfter struggling for years to maintain relaxed hair; I finally decided to stop fighting my ever emerging curly hair. But, I still had some reservations. I didn't know where, or even how to start my journey. I began reading everything I could on natural hair. The more I read the more interested in "going natural" I became. I immediately stopped getting relaxers, and began to transition. I transitioned for approximately 5 months, and one day (after looking at some videos on YouTube and doing some more research) I decided I wanted to go all the way! I cut off all my relaxed ends, and continued on what has been the most freeing experience (outside of accepting Jesus as savior) of my life. I hope I can impart what I have learned and be of some assistance to help you with your own personal hair journey to freedom!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18138936100980395931noreply@blogger.com0
